Must have mods in 2024 - r/Mechwarrior5 (2024)

Hi folks, wanted to start a new game but my mod list became corrupted. What are the must have mods these days for gameplay extension, lore friendliness and immersion?

Before anyone mentions it, Von Biomes gets mentioned a lot as a must get but it can stifle performance a little bit (the game already is choppy tbh) it does add nice diversity to environments just be mindful you're funning the risk of more FPS drops.

I tried a few visual enhancement packs and some are really nice but again its a here and there.Personally performance matters more and these are all for aesthetics really like volumetric lighting. Some of the battle FX packs are good though for making projectiles look more distinct.

Theres also the Xenopax mods, I will say the art and optimise one are handy but avoid the foliage one... it can tank FPS with the extra plant life added to maps.

Basically any of the YAML mods are the first stop for gameplay changes. But as someone else said loading times will increase.

If anyones gonna ask about my specs, Im running a 3700x 12 core 3.7ghz cpu, Vengeance DDR4 32gb 3200mhz and an RTX 2070 Super and an NVME M.2 SSD for games.

So not the most powerful but current standards but it's held its own for a while (Im about to upgrade though, so Im curious to see if performance gets buffed)

Agreed re: vonBiomes tanking frame rate. Sometimes the procedural generation doesn’t play nice with certain biomes and navigation gets difficult in a way that feels more feature than bug, but it’s still a net positive for me.

Loading times for YAML mods (mostly Clan Mech and additional IS Mechs, literally over 11GB together) in my experience, are mostly just the initial load to main menu, maybe some minor slowdowns when changing systems but nothing too major.

I do not recommend Vonbiomes anymore. Since versions 16-17 optimization has gone out of the window, with some effects randomly tanking framerate with no apparent reason (hello dust storms), and a nasty bug which causes fps to dip below 60 on mission load even on a 4080, until you restart the mission and magically it goes up to 150 again

In addition, all the biomes with lots of destructibles such as space port, forest and ice planet really mess with the AI pathing (which really does not need more reasons to bork itself) and you'll see friendly mechs wandering around or stuck on small terrain features until you manually destroy them

The author seems not concerned at all with these reports, and instead continuously solicits donations for his Patreon in order to receive "early access" to new mod versions (which is against Nexus guidelines & ToS btw). Sometimes a new version spends months in early access on Patreon prior to finding its way to the nexus "peasants", and if you ask him about it his reason is "it's a beta and not ready for release yet, but if you pay me... wink wink". Which is honestly infuriating

I played vanilla through the campaign and then modded it for career mode. I've already experienced a lot of change, and these have been my favorite. In terms of performance, you'll need to do some research and testing.

-YAML and its extras are basically required, but the YAML revised mod that replaces some of the core YAML mods is very nice.

-vonbiomes really made a difference in how the game felt. If you can handle it cause some maps legit made my CPU overheat and I had to turn down some graphic settings (my PC was decent in 2020 as a reference).

-Coyotes mission pack. Another huge game changer. Adds a lot of extra mission, voice work, challenges, mid mission encounters, and now tanks and vtols.

-Tt Ai mod huge improvement of how the AI works

I run like 30 mods, but most are just qol improvement, and my load time for the game is like 5 mins, lol. The easiest thing is to go on the nexus and look at the collections for MW5. The highest rated one is where I started and took or added things as necessary. Everything i said is included in it

YAML mods are still the best I think. But as you add them the game takes longer and longer to boot up. And runs into memory leek issues.

You sure they're from YAML? The base game leaks like a sieve, mostly why the yaml garbage collection option is in there, to mitigate them.

It just seems worse when you have a load of the yaml stuff running. I have the task manager open and watch the resources. It will start running around 3gig of ram usage. And after a couple system jumps it’s starts to climb . When it hits around 5gig that’s when things start getting janky and slow. And then suddenly the game will use all that’s left of my ram 64 gig of ram and then crash. I can usually get about an hour of play time. Before it bombs out on me. If I don’t use the special variants yaml mod I feel like I get more time before it crashes.

I've run a fairly involved mod suite involving most of YAML on an ancient (10 years old) system, never had that happen.

Probably one of the old graphics mods like WarFX leaking (that's the most common one I see, though I keep seeing now the odd thing where vonbiomes causing chugging after a couple of missions?)

Heck, chuck up your modlist and I can have a nosey, if you want?

1

u/CycloCyanide5d ago

Oh yea I don’t do VonBioms . That makes the game crash virtually every second or third mission. You may be right on the WarFX. I don’t like that weird smoke it does anyway.

It's known to cause memleaks here and there. And set fire to your Leopard mechbays, lol.

Special Variants isn't even that big of a mod, around 350MB, the biggest offenders are the ones that add entirely new models and mechs. Namely: Yet Another Clan Mech, and Yet Another IS Mech. 5.7GB and 6.2GB respectively.

Yaml and pilot overhaul

Other than those already mentioned. Can't remember names but skip jumpship animation and the one that adds more info to map overlay.

I use most of the mods that Baradul is using for his current play through on YouTube

E: I also use the buy salvage mod though you so need self-control. I allow myself to only ever go over by max of 3 and only if it means getting the last part of a mech I want to use.

If you use YAML, Star Map Mouse Over is redundant, it was integrated into it several patches ago. It also added in a jumpship animation skip, but it's kinda jank and I still prefer a standalone mod

The mw2 Betty mod

besides all the mods the others have already pointed out, such as YAML, Coyote and TTrulez AI, please also check Battle Grid Orders. It literally changes your game and AI companions finally have a use

Restore traits, mech attribute viewer, and faction standing tweaks are the three mods that I never play without.
